During wintertime, the threat of seasonal sickness seems neverending. Even if you have managed to escape the flu, there are cold temperatures, coughs, and sore throats that are almost certainly around the corner. In order to avoid taking medication, except when strictly necessary, try a natural cure first. Among "grandmother's remedies" is one recipe that’s effective against coughs and throat problems – turnip decoction.
Turnip decoction, effective and easy to make
The turnip, very rich in fibre, has no particular nutritional properties. It contains several minerals, but the quantity just isn’t that high compared to other vegetables – though it does have a good dose of vitamin C. The best way to get the most out of this vegetable is to make a decoction. The preparation is really simple. Take 150 grams of turnip that’s already peeled and cut into pieces. Put it on the stove in a pot with a litre of milk. Bring the mixture to a boil and let cook for at least 40 minutes. Once finished, let cool slightly before drinking it. You can also add half a tablespoon of grappa and a teaspoon of honey. The result is a drink that is effective against any kind of cough. This is because the sulphurous substances contained in the turnip help to disinfect the respiratory tract and promote the elimination of phlegm.
The turnip is also used to make syrup
For another turnip concoction, you can make a turnip syrup instead of a drink; it’s equally useful against cough and sore throat. Start by peeling and cutting a turnip into thin slices. These should be placed one on top of the other with sugar in between each (preferably brown sugar). Once the layering is finished, cover the container with plastic wrap and let rest for at least 12 hours. Afterwards, filter the liquid that has formed into a small glass or plastic bottle. Another way you can do it is by cutting the upper side of the vegetable and create a hole in the lower half. Let flavors blend overnight. This syrup already has a sweet taste on its own, but it tastes even better with a little lemon extract. If you don’t have to give it to children, you can also add some alcohol that helps it last longer – besides having a warming effect.
